How to Write Your Name In Cement Without Making a Mess

When we were pouring the cement slab for the new garage, the number one thing I was excited about was writing our names in it. I mean, a new garage is exciting and everything but give me a slab of wet cement and I am PUMPED. We were literally hovering over the cement guys as they were smoothing out, like, “Now is it time? What about now? How about now?” And finally it was time and we got to test our plan and it worked! The coolest way to write your name in cement EVER.

Materials

Make Time: 5 Minutes

This one is totally simple! Just plan what you want to say and get your cookie cutters ready. Line up as many as you can by placing them gently on the cement. The cement should be mostly dry. If you have repeat letters, leave a blank space and move the repeat letter to the new space as you finish with it. Once you have your letters spaced the way you like them, gently tap the first letter on all sides with a hammer to sink the cookie cutter into the cement. The letter only needs to sink in about 1/4″ or so. Gently remove by pulling them directly upward. Repeat with all of your letters or numbers and that’s it!

Cool, right? And it’s totally clean and clear, so you don’t have to tear up your cement by dragging a stick across it or something. Hey, how about that glamorous hammer, huh? That old girl has seen a thing or two in her day. Also — I just love that picture of Ryan. He was so stoked and it was just such a good day full of possibilities and excitement. Not to get too deep in a post about cement, but the fact that he gets genuinely jazzed about stuff like this is why I married the guy. And that smile. Duh.

So there you go! Our little fam, engraved forever in a slab of cement. What would you write? xoxo

  1. Chelsea, Great idea and it looks so cool. We have a couple footprints in our cement walk. None of my kids have ever fessed up to it. We were able to eliminate my son but both of my girls wore the same size shoe back then so we still don’t know who the culprit was. I actually like it. Pat S

  2. I love this! I’m so glad I searched for this , getting our new driveway poured as I type this. YEA! Thank you

  3. Thanks for the tips. We are going to use it for our grave markers in our pet cemetery. We have concrete over each grave and will mark with names and dates.

  4. THANK YOU! On a whim I Googled “how to write your name in cement” since I thought there MUST be a better way than using a stick! Plus, I was heartbroken that our slab is being poured while our son is out of town! This made me feel all better. Was able to purchase same-day crisis mode at Michael’s! Looks beautiful and so fun. LOVE!

    1. PS: heartbroken since we couldn’t do all our handprints! We’ll save those for the driveway 😉

  5. Thanks for clarifying that the letters only have to get about 1/4 inch deep to leave a clear imprint. My husband and I are looking for a ready-mix cement supplier so we can install a large rectangular patio in the backyard of our new ranch-style home. We’ve talked about putting our last name on the patio somewhere, so thanks for teaching me how to do it in an easy and neat way! http://www.plconcrete.net/concrete
