I know, when you think of going to Cabo, your first thought probably isn’t “let’s take the kids along!”

Cabo San Lucas is mostly known for rowdy spring breakers and all-night parties at the bars.

But! After a few family trips, I can truly say that there are tons of things to do in Cabo San Lucas with kids. And you’ll definitely in good company — families are everywhere.

Traveling to Los Cabos

In researching a Cabo trip, you’ll quickly find out that lots of the more trendy current recommendations actually aren’t in Cabo San Lucas.

They’re about a 45 minute drive away in either direction, in the cities of San Jose del Cabo or Todos Santos. The three cities together are kind of generally referred to as Los Cabos.

But knowing if you’re not wanting to rent a car, I made sure to find tons of things to try in Cabo San Lucas proper. So that’s where you can find everything I recommend here.

Getting in, you may want to arrange a van shuttle from the airport through your hotel. If you’re traveling with kids and you’re particular about carseats, be sure you bring your own.

Our kids are big enough now that we can travel with this amazing little travel booster, the Mifold. It literally folds up small enough to fit in my purse but it makes seatbelts safe for little kids.

Perfect for traveling in the van (about a 45 minute drive from the airport to the hotel zone).

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas with Kids

I’ve been to Cabo multiple times, both with and without kids, and the resorts we’ve stayed in were great. I can particularly recommend the Playa Grande and Casa Dorada.

At Playa Grande, the pools are great and there’s lots to do on the property if you don’t want to actually wander off. It’s on a stretch of private beach which is great for playing in the sand, but the waves are way too big to actually go in the water.

That being said, there were a ton of families and we felt super comfortable having the kids around.

Casa Dorada is again, a very family-friendly resort. Casa Dorada is on Medano Beach, which has a much gentler shore line, and the kids can go in the water here.

The tradeoff is that Medano beach is public and full of locals trying to sell their wares, along with lots of party-loving tourists. But it’s a scene that’s fun to see at least for a bit.

Where to Eat in Cabo San Lucas with Kids

Finding fun places to eat is one of my favorite things to do when we travel! Here were a few of our favorites in Cabo, all of which were easy peasy with the kids.

Tacos Gardenias A no-frills taco shop where the locals seem to go. Insanely delicious and affordable tacos, along with a really great array of salsas for the table.

Los Tres Gallos My favorite meal, hands down! Go for an early dinner as the sun is setting so you can get a view of the courtyard in the daytime and after dark, when all of the lights come on. Wandering musicians, amazing food, lots of fun. Get the tostaditas!

The Office You’ve gotta go at least once if you’re in Cabo. It’s on busy Medano beach, and you can eat with your toes in the sand. I love all of the colorful tables, chairs, and umbrellas.

Carnitas Los Michoacanos Heads up — this place is pork only but it’s some of the best carnitas I’ve ever had. You can even get pork by the kilo if you want! Freshly made tortillas and the biggest order of guac I’ve ever seen. Get an agua fresca for the kids to share (ours loved the watermelon). Another heads up — I had to play translator here because the staff is Spanish-speaking only (just about every other place had English-speaking staff).

Mi Casa Another Cabo mainstay and a fun dinner experience. You might want to make a reservation for this colorful, bustling spot. I loved my green enchiladas!

Where to Shop in cabo with Kids

La Coyota If I live for another hundred years I won’t find the words to describe this place! One of my favorite shopping experiences I’ve ever had abroad. It’s a huge, meandering shop full of local, handmade, and all kinds of various treasures. Tons of home goods, clothes, kid stuff, decor, accessories, and so much more. It’s all contained in a converted house, which has twists and turns and balconies and hallways, filled with shoppable items. We spent a long time here. The kids loved it too — just make sure you help little hands hold the breakable things.

Mi Casa I’m including this in my shopping roundup because even though it’s a restaurant, it has a really great shop attached! If you go for dinner, go a bit early so you’ll have time to look around. It’s packed full of colorful things.

Flea Market Hit the flea market if you’re looking for simple souvenirs to bring home for people, or just to get a vibe for how much things cost before you really dive in to some shopping. There are lots of colorful stalls in the market around the marina, and all kinds of fun things for kids to look through.

Morning Shell Collecting Free, easy, and beautiful! Our kids got so excited to go out every morning before breakfast (we would go in our jammies) and collect the shells that had washed up on the beach. We brought back a bag of shells that the kids are planning to use for art projects.

Whale Watching or Sunset Cruise We have totally lucked out to be there during the whale migration in the past, so we booked a sunset cruise on a catamaran and have spotted families of whales! You’ll also have the chance to see rays, dolphins, and other sea life. But even if you miss the wildlife sightings, a sunset boat ride in and of itself is so worth it.

Sea Turtle Release If you’re there during sea turtle season, see if you can help the hatchery with a sea turtle release! We happened to find a lost baby sea turtle on the beach one morning, so we stayed with it until the turtle rescue team came to get it. They’re becoming endangered because of city encroachment and predators, so Los Cabos has turtle teams to help get them to the ocean. It was so. so. cute.

Rent a Lounger Head to Medano Beach with some beach toys for the kids and rent some loungers in the front row so you can relax while they build sand castles. Cachet Beach Club has loungers and umbrellas that you can use for free if you order drinks or food. Lots of the others nearby have a minimum. You can also find a little cabana if you want your own private space!

Relaaaaax That’s what a Mexico vacay is for, right? We brought board games (we are obsessed with this one) and coloring supplies, and we just chilled out a lot. Swim, beach, guac, repeat.

And that’s it! I just love traveling to Mexico in general — it’s so colorful, and the people are so warm and kind. Not to mention the guacamole. Always the guacamole.
