Travel in San Francisco

Now that we live near San Francisco we’ve been spending days here and there exploring the city, and it’s just. so. beautiful. We took a little belated birthday trip to the city and had the most perfect day! If you find yourself in San Francisco and are looking for an easy one day itinerary, we’ve got you covered.

Start at brunch, because duh. We tried Sweet Maple, which is known for it’s Millionaire’s Bacon. (Bacon baked with brown sugar, cayenne, red, and black pepper. Boom. You’ve also gotta try the Dixie Bacon while you’re at it. Might as well really go for that heart attack.) Expect a wait but the line goes quickly. We didn’t booze but they have bottomless mimosas if you’re into that sort of thing, which you definitely should be. Side note for you mamas — they were so accommodating of Henry and we even were able to keep him in his stroller next to our table. Win.

After brunch, head to Hayes Valley to shop around and walk off the bacon. If you’re there, our top shop picks to hit are Lavish, Public Bikes, Miette Confiserie, and Fiddlesticks. Lavish is a paper lover’s dream, and Public Bikes is worth a peek even if you’re not into cycling. At Miette you’ll find lots of fun imported candies and delicious little cakes & cookies. And Fiddlesticks is a kid’s shop with one of the coolest selections of toys I’ve come across.

After you shop around, lounge in the sun by the park and people watch. Or grab a little coffee at one of the food trucks.

Next, hop in your car and drive up the hill so you can drive back down Lombard Street, the curviest street in the world. My dad used to drive us down all the time but Mr. Lovely had never been. So we made his inaugural journey. Keep driving and head up to Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. Circle the little lot until you can find a parking spot, then hop out and take in the crazy views. On a clear day you can see the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate, and the downtown skyline. You also might find a couple of dudes wearing matching sunnies.

We ended the day in Union Square kind of wandering around and doing nothing too special, but I will say that if you’re looking for a photobooth you can find one in the Westfield Mall. Ya know, just in case.

And a couple of random mom thoughts for day trips with little dude: Hank totally loves the Beco Gemini carrier, and so do we. It’s comfy to wear and he’ll totally nap in it, so we were able to keep to his sleeping schedule. Also, dressing in layers were key for the little one because SF can be toasty in the sun but freezing in the shade.

I’m thinking that as time goes on I’ll have lots more one-day itineraries in the city, so keep your eyes peeled! xoxo

  3. Thank you so much for sharing your San Fran spots! We are heading that with with our little guy in May. I am having fun making a wish list of things to do and places to eat. 🙂

  4. Sweet Maple is pretty much a must if you’re visiting SF. I love the City, but I would never want to live there myself. I like my quiet cow town. (lol) If you’re looking for some awesome beaches to go to in that area, head over to Rockaway Beach in Pacifica or go to Seal Beach in Sausalito. The hills are a bit scary, but the view is amazing. Plus you get to go to the Marine Mammal Center near there. Always a nice spot.

  5. Sounds like a wonderful day in San Fran! Great pics as well. Thanks for sharing!
