I’m about to drop a realness bomb on you. Sometimes I don’t like wrapping presents. Boom.

I love the idea of wrapping presents. It’s all cozy and fun and you put music on and drink hot chocolate by the tree and wrap away. Until you have paper cuts everywhere and run out of tape and just can’t get your corners folded right and you’d rather be drinking wine anyway.

Anyone feel me here? If you do, this one’s for you. Super simple, super affordable, super fast DIY Christmas gift wrap. It happens to go perfectly with our printable gift tags, too.

Using Christmas Paper Bags for Gift Wrapping

I love using paper bags for Christmas gift wrap for lots of reasons.

First, they’re the ultimate affordable material for gift wrap. A few dollars will buy you a pack of 100 bags and you can use them year after year, decorated in different ways. I recommend checking your local dollar store for great prices on brown paper bags.

Secondly, they’re a great blank canvas. The texture and weight of the paper is great for drawing, painting, and stamping on.

And finally, they’re a charming and unexpected take on Christmas gift wrapping! A gift that’s given in gift wrap with a DIY touch comes with that little extra something that makes it very special.

Easy Christmas Gift Wrap

Make Time: 5 Minutes

  1. Ink your stamp liberally by pressing it gently into the ink pad a few times. If you’re using white pigment like we did, be extra sure that you have enough ink to show up on the brown paper bag.
  2. While your bags are still folded and flat, stamp an image on the front side.
  3. Fill with your gift or goodies and fold the top over twice, toward the stamp.
  4. Punch two holes in the folded top section, string with twine, and tie in a bow. Done!

How to Make Your Own Stamp

Making your own stamp to create Christmas gift wrap is really simple! I wrote a tutorial on it here.

Christmas Goody Bag

One way I love to use this DIY gift wrap is to make Christmas goody bags!

Make your gift bags and fill them with:

  • little holiday trinkets for a school class party
  • freshly baked cookies for neighbors
  • gift cards for teachers
  • nail polish or lip glosses for a holiday bachelorette party

And so many more ideas!

How to Make a large Gift Bag

You can also translate this idea into a larger gift bag if your gift won’t fit inside a paper lunch sack.

Simply save your paper grocery bags, remove the handles, and do the tutorial steps on the large bag! You can stamp you image in staggered rows to create a stamped pattern on the entire front of the bag.

  5. I’d love to know what kind of ink you used. I’m trying to stamp on grocery bags and am having trouble finding an ink that shows up enough. I’d like to primarily use white ink, which it looks like you have done successfully. If you wouldn’t mind sending me the info on the brand and type of ink you used, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

    1. Hi Tera! I used a Color Box white pigment ink stamp pad and it worked really well! You just have to give it a little time to dry and cure. Hope it works for you!
