Hinoki & The Bird

Hinoki & The Bird

Happy President’s Day! Since today’s a big beautiful vacation day for most of you, I thought I’d just share a bit about what Mr. Lovely and I did on Valentine’s Day. We wanted to do something a tiny bit special but still pretty chill, so we headed to a V-Day lunch at a spot we’ve been wanting to try, Hinoki & the Bird.

Let me just start off by saying that during the business lunch hours on a weekday, the two of us stuck out like sore thumbs. We were surrounded by dudes in suits, who were saying things like “merger” and “investments.” And while we had these silly grins pasted on our faces because the place was so beautiful and the food was so good, everyone else kind of seemed cranky to be in a business meeting on Valentine’s Day. All of that is to say that this is definitely not the kind of place that we frequent. We’re more a taco stand type of couple. But stepping it up every once in a while is super fun.

Anyway! If you go, definitely try to sit outside — the patio is beautiful and I couldn’t stop staring overhead at the hanging air plants. You definitely feel like you’re transported to a different place, with all of the sleek wood paneling and simple, natural elements. I was totally taken by their pretty mismatched flatware. And the food… well, the food is ridiculous.

We ordered a smorgasbord of little things to share. My absolute faves were the pumpkin toast with miso jam and goat cheese, and the persimmon and burrata salad. (You could probably put burrata on an old shoe and I would still love it.) Mr. Lovely couldn’t get enough of the fried chicken sandwich. And if you want to finish with a little something sweet, try the miso mochi with butterscotch. It’s just a few tiny bites but packed with more flavor than you can probably handle.

After we left we decided to hit up the Journey of a Dress exhibit — bonus! Mr. Lovely didn’t even mind too much because of the crazy awesome patterned walls. The Diane von Furstenberg dresses were awesome and all, but those walls were all I was focused on. So obviously we had to have a full-out photo shoot.

And that’s a wrap! Mr. Lovely ended the day by sending me a hilarious Red Stamp invitation to our couch for a House of Cards marathon. Probably the best Valentine ever. Have a great week! xoxo

  1. Your pictures are gorgeous-I have total photography envy! Also, Valentines=House of Cards for me and the hubby, too!

  2. You two are too cute! Looks like the perfect valentines day. p.s. I find myself struggling to avoid using the word “lovely” on here so as not to appear cheeky. Perhaps I use said word too much. Or perhaps it’s a reflection of the things you post. Likely both.
