I. Love. These. Pencils. I want to make them for everyone and run through the streets passing them out like candy. Seriously. They’re also pretty fun to make, so if there’s someone on your list who would love these little babies (a coworker, perhaps?), let’s get down to business. You’ll need:
- plain No. 2 pencils (dollar store, yo!)
- spray paint
- Sharpie paint pens
- Scotch Blue painter’s tape
Start by masking the eraser and metal ring at the top of your pencils.
Next, spray paint your pencils. It may take a couple of coats to cover the No. 2 stamp.
Finally, use your Sharpie paint pens to make tiny dots up and down each ridge of the pencil! It seems like it would take forever, but once you get a rhythm it goes really quickly.
Bundle them up and you’re done! Make it and give it. xoxo

adorable!! what a perfect stocking stuffer!
Thanks Laura! They may or may not be going in a bunch of stockings around these parts on Christmas Eve.
Love the colours you’ve gone for here, especially the gold on cream. Sweet and simple DIY. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Elena!
These are beautiful! What a smart handmade idea!
Love this!
This is such a great idea!! So simple and inexpensive but soo cute!!!
Hi Aileen! Yeah, the low-cost factor is always one of my favorite things about a project! I had the spraypaint laying around, and the pencils were 16 for $1. Can’t beat that!
Every time I read your blog, I am reminded that you are a genius.
Haha, stop it! You’ll make me conceited.
Si simple and so cute! I could totally see myself doing this for the girls in my office because everyone loves cute pencils!
Thanks Yelle! I’d love to see the finished product if you make them.
i must make these, stat.
So cute. Just wondering if you have tried sharpening them. I hate when pencils don’t sharpen properly–like the ones with plastic film on the outside. It’s even worse when they jam the pencil sharpener. I would like to make some of these, but I want them to work well in my pencil sharpener.
Yep, I’ve got mine all sharpened up and am using them regularly! Should be great.
Too sweet!
I was wondering what brand spray paint did you use? Thanks!
wow this are adorable! may I ask where that white and gold twisted thread from?
Hi Joanne! It’s from a package of metallic baker’s twine that I found at Michael’s. It comes with a few colors (silver, bronze, gold, and one more that I can’t remember!). You should be able to find something similar at most craft stores, probably in the beading section.
What a great idea! So simple and yet such a delightful way to give pencils a little character
I used to paint pencils a lot, but I never thought to cover the top with tape.
