Sparkler Heart

Hey it’s Friday and tomorrow is Independence Day! Go light a sparkler and thank a veteran and think about the history of our country because it’s fascinating! Do you have plans? We’ve got some of our best pals staying with us for the weekend so we’ll be BBQing and swimming and basically trying not to melt.

That’s it, gang — nothing more today than a wish for a wonderful and safe Fourth. Happy celebrating! xoxo

Each month we feature a new Lovely Girl, meant to inspire you to explore the zillions of ways you can lovely up your life. These gals are based on real-life lovelies that we know and adore, and are illustrated by none other than the super-talented Lindsey! July‘s Lovely Girl is inspired by one of our very favorite Boss Ladies in the blogosphere. Can you guess who?

July Lovely Girl // The Boss Lady

The Boss Lady is the gal who’s got it all going on. She’s not afraid to be in charge, she’s not afraid to be smart, and she’s certainly not afraid of a little challenge. The Boss Lady dives headlong toward her goals and chases them with a passion. And though she may always be spinning a dozen different plates, she does it with an ease and charm that make you think anything is possible. And with her, it just might be. Because The Boss Lady knows the winning combination to make her way in the world: brains, talent, a lot of hard work, and a smile. xoxo

DIY Painted Pattern Patio Umbrella

Our backyard is coming along thanks to the gang at AllModern! When we moved in, there were a few old dead trees in the yard that needed to be cut down. So we did. And then we realized that even old dead trees provide shade. And YEEEESH it’s bright out there in the afternoon. Cue patio umbrella. But you know me — I can never leave well enough alone, so obviously I decided that our umbrella needed a custom DIY painted pattern on it. Have you ever painted a patio umbrella? It’s crazy easy and the effect is so pretty, because the pattern shows through underneath when the sun shines! I thought this project would take forever but I was really only painting for about an hour. Let’s do it!

Materials

  • plain patio umbrella and stand: this one from AllModern is perfect and really affordable (we got the umbrella in white and the base and pole in champagne)
  • latex paint in a few of your favorite shades
  • 2″ paint brush
  • drop cloth

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

DIY Painted Pattern Patio Umbrella

Step 1: Lay out your drop cloth, extend and lock your umbrella, and lay the umbrella down on the cloth.

Step 2: Choose your main paint color for the umbrella. Using this color, dip the paintbrush and paint horizontal strokes across one section of the umbrella. The strokes can be as long or short as you like them; mine varied from about 3″ to 8″. Leave the edges with a brushy, unfinished feel. Leave a few empty holes here and there in the pattern so that you can go back and fill in other colors.

Step 3: Continue in the same manner with your first color around all sections of the umbrella.

Step 4: Once the main color is done, repeat the process with your accent colors. I decided to do about 1-3 swashes of the accent color on each section of the umbrella, just to make sure that they were evenly spread around.

Step 5: Continue until all of the blank holes are filled in. Leave your umbrella to dry for a couple of hours until all paint is fully cured.

That’s it! So easy, huh? And now you have your very own, one-of-a-kind patterned umbrella to sit under while you sip something cool and delish. If you have a backyard, I really hope you try this one out — it was so fun to make and I’m loving the color it adds to the yard. Have fun, y’all! xoxoDIY Painted Pattern Patio Umbrella

Henry Seven Months

I’m feeling pretty smug now that I’m the mother of a seven-month-old. Yep, everyone is sleeping at night (for months now), the kid knows how to nap, he’s been on an airplane, he eats solids, and he can recite Shakespeare. Haaaaa just making sure you were listening. There’s no Shakespeare happening yet. But! When I say “Where’s Daddy?” he looks over at Ryan with a big grin. And that’s just as good, right?!

This child of mine loves sweet potatoes and bananas and asparagus and peas and pretty much just eating in general. He’s chubbing up and it’s my favorite thing to grab his squishy baby thighs and just squeeze ’em. He loves dogs, too, and will let them just come right up and lick his toes and his face and he thinks it’s just swell. But most of all, the kid loves cups. I mean, give this baby a cup and he will be your best friend forever until you can’t stand it any more. Mostly to-go cups, like if we had a fountain soda from Chipotle on Monday, he’ll still be playing with the cup on Friday. He wants to be a big kid and drink from cups SO BAD! But mostly he can’t figure it out and just chews on the bottom. No joke, we took a cup with ice in it on the plane ride home from Colorado and he played with it for probably half of the flight.

So what else, you ask? He’s starting to copy sounds. He’s getting lots stronger at sitting up. He so wants to scoot but for the life of him can’t figure it out. He’s just as happy as ever and every day I wish I could stop time because surely being a mom doesn’t get any more fun than this, right? And then the next day comes and something even more fun happens. Why did nobody warn me about this?!

Happy seven months, tiny dude! xoxo

I have a sickness, and the only cure is more dip dyeing. I can’t get enough! You know how when you find a new technique or craft supply and you just want to use it on everything? Yeah, that. I had so much fun with these dip dyed towels I wanted to go another round and make some new throw pillows for our couch! They’re perfect for summer and totally brightened up our living room.

If you want to make your own but you’re intimidated about getting the right supplies, you can grab a kit to make them right here! Yup, these ombre dip dye pillows are my kit of the month over on Darby Smart. The dye they have is great and works like a charm. Order your own kit and everything you need to make them will come to your door so you can get your DIY on.

Lovelies, I’m in one of those moods where I’m in love with the world. The beautiful, crazy, messy, difficult world. We came back from our trip to Denver early this week and ever since, Henry has been a little off his schedule and a bit fussy. We came back to piles of work. We came back to a dogsitting gig for a dog with fleas. We came back to a messy house and an empty fridge.

But you know what? For some reason I find it all kind of wonderful. Because that’s just how life goes, right? Some days are perfect and some days you have a messy house and some days you win the lottery and some days you stub your toe one too many times. You can choose to wish the time away and wait for tomorrow or you can choose to just hang on to the moment and laugh about the empty fridge (and just order a pizza, for crying out loud). As usual, I’m not sure I’m expressing myself as eloquently as I should but the bottom line is this: Today, right now, my life feels perfectly imperfect and just exactly right.

Hoping you feel the same today, and that you have a weekend full of whatever it is that you love to do! xoxo

The 4th of July is coming our way, and I’m so excited to celebrate! There’s a special place in my heart for the 4th. I love that it’s a holiday that the whole nation can celebrate together, to take some time to appreciate our history and the things that have made us great. I also love that it’s in the dead of summer, because that means we get to celebrate with all of the things that summer brings — swimming pools, BBQs, and a little something cool and refreshing to sip. So we whipped up this little punch recipe for your July 4th celebrations, so that we can all say cheers for America together! It’s a perfect, simple recipe to bring people together for a laid back Independence Day party.

Ingredients (Makes 8 Servings)

  • 1 1/2 cups Smirnoff Watermelon
  • 1/2 large seedless watermelon
  • 5 lemons
  • 6-7 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • club soda

watermelon-rosemary-punch2

To start, cube your watermelon and squeeze your lemons. Remove the leaves from 4 rosemary sprigs and chop coarsely. Add watermelon, lemon juice, rosemary, and sugar to a blender and puree for about 30 seconds. Once blended, strain the mixture to remove all rosemary and watermelon pulp. (You can make this part the night before your party and chill it so it’s ready the next day!)

In a pitcher, mix 1 1/2 cups of Smirnoff Watermelon with 2 1/2 cups of your pureed watermelon mixture to create your punch.

Pour a half cup of your punch mixture over ice, top with club soda, and add a sprig of the extra rosemary for garnish.

watermelon-rosemary-punch3
I love how the rosemary adds just a little extra oomph to the watermelony flavor! And since I’m such a watermelon fiend in the summertime, this punch is right up my alley. So! What will you be doing this 4th of July? Do you have any special traditions or celebrations? Hopefully there’s a firework or sparkler thrown in there somewhere. And while you’re planning your festivities, you’ve gotta try this crazy delicious recipe and make a #Punch4Everybody! Please, as always, remember to celebrate responsibly and have a safe & fabulous 4th! xoxo

Modern July 4th Tablev

This will be the very first July 4th that we’ll be in our own house, with our own actual backyard where we can celebrate! We’re having some of our best pals come in from out of town to visit and I wanted to put together something special for a fun outdoor meal. But rather than go the typical red-white-and-blue explosion that usually goes along with the 4th of July, I thought it would be cool to do a modern take on a patriotic tablescape. So I browsed around on AllModern and picked up a few things that are turning out to be some of my new favorite pieces for backyard entertaining!

We stuck with navy, white, and a few metallic touches for the whole shebang. I did a quick DIY treatment on some simple flatware (tutorial is on the way soon!), and used my favorite DIY gold leaf succulents (from a couple posts back) instead of florals. I also thought it would be cool to have a little bit of a geometric theme, so the square pedestal and square dish sets were perfect. I’m loving those little Pantone dish sets! They’re almost like bento boxes that you can mix and match.

Modern July 4th Table

The white garden stools are around for extra seating or for overflow of dishes and glasses. Like a really cute little mini bar! And best of all — that big beautiful table. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been pining for a backyard dining table. You know the opening sequence from Parenthood? That’s what I’m talking about, y’all. Dinners in the backyard with candles and plates getting passed back and forth and bottles of wine and lots of ridiculous laughing. That’s my plan for this beaut of a table.

DIY Cornhole Game

More backyard fun, gang! We made this cornhole game set recently, and it just so happened that it was right before my niece’s 5th birthday party, which (of course) had a Frozen theme. She seemed to be under the impression that we made the game to look like Anna and Elsa’s dresses — and oddly enough it did happen to go perfectly with her party decor. But that’s mostly because Behr paint has some primo color selections and these were the ones that I was totally digging! But Anna and Elsa aside, my whole family has been having a ball in the backyard with this little DIY cornhole game. (Psst — don’t miss our giveaway with Behr, at the end of the post!)

Materials

  • Behr paint in Glass Tile, Rainwater, Little Bow Pink, Inked, and Shea
  • 1″ plywood
  • four large hinges
  • drill
  • saw
  • sander
  • paintbrushes
  • painter’s tape
  • fabric
  • dry beans
  • sewing notions

Make Time: 4 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

DIY Cornhole Game

Step 1: Cut out your wood pieces. Note: We made our game a little smaller than standard size. Feel free to size up your pieces if you’re a stickler for the rules! Cut two small rectangles, each 8″ x 18″. Cut two large rectangles, each 34″ x 18″. At the top of the large rectangles, cut a 5″ hole in each. Sand all of your pieces.

Step 2: Connect your large and small rectangles by drilling hinges into the wood.

Step 3: If desired, paint a coat of primer or white paint on your wood to prepare it for painting.

Step 4: On the top of the large rectangle, paint a layer of your first color. Work your way about halfway down on the edges to create a rough triangle. Do this on both boards and allow to dry.

Step 5: Mask a triangle shape with painter’s tape, just above where the first color color ends. Paint a stripe of your next color, again leaving a rough bottom edge.

Step 6: Continue working your way down the board until you have all the stripes you’d like. Finish with your last color creating a large triangle at the base of the board.

Step 7: With a 1″ foam brush, paint a ring around the hole cut in the board.

Step 8: Make your beanbags. Cut out 16 squares of fabric, each 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″. If you’d like different colors for different teams, and a gold side to your beanbags like ours, cut out 8 gold squares and four squares each of two different colors.

Step 9: Put right sides together and sew a straight stitch around all sides, leaving about 2″ open.

Step 10: Flip the bags right side out.

Step 11: Fill the bags about 2/3 full of dry beans. Sew them closed with a hidden stitch.

Get your cornhole on all summer long! I tell you what, this game is addictive. If those beanbags are laying around, you can bet that sooner or later you’ll have a full on cornhole tournament fired up in your backyard.
