Why I Love This Valentines Backdrop

Photo backdrops are a passion of mine, for a few reasons.

First, they’re so quick! You can create a major statement piece with some serious wow factor, often in less than an hour (this one took an hour to create).

Also, they’re easy to create on a shoestring budget. With a little creativity, you can make something that looks really beautiful, fun, and expensive — with just a few dollars or with what you already have in your craft drawer.

And finally, they help create really fun memories! They function as not only party or holiday decor, but they bring people together for silly or meaningful photos that you’ll have forever.

The Best Paper To Use For a Valentines Backdrop

For this backdrop, I didn’t want to spend a cent so I went with what I had. That happened to be a roll of premium red crepe paper and a roll of gold wrapping paper.

You can find those items linked below.

However, you can create this Valentines backdrop out of just about any type of paper you have in stock. Other ideas that would work are cardstock, newspaper, kraft paper, printer paper, construction paper, and more.

Basically, the best paper to use for a Valentines backdrop is whatever you have!

Types of Adhesive for Applying a Backdrop to a Wall

Before applying your adhesive to the wall to hang your Valentines backdrop, I recommend doing a test patch first.

Use your adhesive on a small patch of wall, preferably in an inconspicuous place, to make sure that the adhesive doesn’t damage the wall at all. You want to avoid peeling or chipping paint on removal, and check that the adhesive doesn’t leave a visible residue that will ruin your space.

The type of adhesive that’s best to use for hanging your Valentines backdrop will be affected by your paper. I found that I needed two types of adhesive (see tutorial instructions below).

Adhesive ideas include Glue Dots, double stick tape, backrolled masking tape, poster putty, mounting tape, and more.

Photo Ideas for Posing with a Valentines Backdrop

To get people into the spirit of posing in front of the Valentines backdrop, it’s a fun idea to include some props nearby!

Leave a supply of fun hats or glasses, balloons, a sign that people can write on, or any other ideas that you think people would have fun with.

How to Make An XO Valentines Backdrop

Make Time: 1 Hour

  1. Start by cutting out your x’s and o’s. I made my letters 6″ x 6″. Use something round to trace the o’s if you like, and a ruler to measure out your x’s. I made 22 o’s and 23 x’s, which resulted in a backdrop that’s about 5 feet wide and four feet tall.
  2. Once the letters are cut out, begin adhering them to the wall. We found that double sided tape worked better on the wrapping paper, while glue dots worked well with the crepe paper. You might need to experiment to find the best stick.
  3. Start with the top row, making it high enough to be above the tallest person’s head that you’ll be photographing. Ensure that your first row is level, and center the following rows according to the top.
  4. Continue until all of the letters are on the wall and set up your camera so that the letters carry on out of frame just a bit, to make it look like they go on forever.

Get ready for lots of Valentine hugs and kisses, and snap away!

Instructions

    1. Start by cutting out your x's and o's. I made my letters 6" x 6". Use something round to trace the o's if you like, and a ruler to measure out your x's. I made 22 o's and 23 x's, which resulted in a backdrop that's about 5 feet wide and four feet tall.
    2. Once the letters are cut out, begin adhering them to the wall. We found that double sided tape worked better on the wrapping paper, while glue dots worked well with the crepe paper. You might need to experiment to find the best stick.

Notes

When adhering your x's and o's to the wall, be sure to test your choice of adhesive first to ensure that it won't damage your wall. Test on a small patch or area that's inconspicuous to avoid any chipping, peeling, or leaving residue behind.

Also, be sure to test your adhesives on your specific paper to see which will stick best to your wall. This will ensure maximum success for your Valentines backdrop, so that it will last for hours!
