One of my favorite things to do around town is leave little love notes for our community downtown. We’ve done balloons, vinyl stickers, and our latest round of notes was spray chalk! These DIY stencil spray chalk sidewalk messages are so easy, so quick, and you could do a zillion different things with them. Advertisement for a shop? Leading guests to a wedding? Birthday messages? Yes to all of the above! Here’s how we made ours.

Materials

Make Time: 15 Minutes Per Stencil

Step 1: Design your stencils in the Cricut Design Space. Note that the stencil paper is 11″ x 18″, so keep your design within those dimensions. (We used multiple sheets for each phrase. We reused the “Be” and the heart each time and had a fresh stencil sheet for each of the other words.)

Step 2: Set the machine to cut stencil paper and cut your stencils.

Step 3: Place your stencils on the ground – the flattest spot you can find will help keep the stencil nice and sharp. If you’re afraid of overspray, you can place some scrap cardboard around the edges of your stencils to protect from that.

Step 4: Shake your chalk can. From about 6″ away, spray the exposed areas of your stencils, keeping your can moving quickly to avoid spraying too much in any one area.

Step 5: Once it’s all filled in, remove your stencils and admire your work!

Extra Tip! If you want to reuse a stencil before the chalk dries on it, wipe it clean with a damp rag so that you don’t get your next design messy with the wet chalk.

That’s it! We left these five notes downtown and it was so fun to bike around afterward and see everybody taking photos with them. It’s just such a neat thing to create something fun to bring the community together. Already dreaming up our next love notes! xoxo

  1. I know this is an old post but do you have a rough idea of how long these messages lasted? Thanks in advance!

  2. What a cool and creative idea! I used to walk around the city when I was still living in Copenhagen, with my friends, and we tied colourful clots on narrow columns or trees. Not only did it look good, but we wanted it to bring joy to the people of the city. Recently, I had a dream about fire which means passion in what you do and creativity. Maybe it is time to do something creative again 🙂
