DIY Pickup Sticks

If memory serves correctly, many of my childhood nights were spent on our living room floor, forcing my sainted mother to play Pick-Up Sticks for hours on end. And she was so good! I remember she had this one technique where she would use one of her sticks to pick up another one by just sort of wiggling it underneath and then launching the second stick through the air. I’m still not sure whether that’s considered cheating, but I beat Mr. Lovely using that trick the other day so I’m calling it good.

Anyway! More DIY games? Did you guys make dominoes or Jenga yet? If not, maybe some DIY pick-up sticks are more your speed.

Materials

  • plain wooden bamboo skewers
  • craft paint in various colors
  • paintbrushes

Make Time: 1 Hour

Make sure all of the bamboo skewers are clean and dusted off. I debated shortening them to regulation Pick-Up Stick size, but what’s the fun in that? Giant Pick-Up Sticks are obviously way better.

Separate the sticks into four piles — three piles of 7 and one pile of 8. Set one extra stick aside as well. In regular Pick-Up sticks, different color sticks are worth differing amounts of points:

black – 25
red – 10
blue – 5
green – 2
yellow – 1

I substituted white, pink, turquoise, mint, and yellow for those colors — but do whatever floats your boat and just remember how many points each color is worth in your world.

Paint the sticks your chosen colors and allow to dry. Leave about an inch unpainted on the blunt end of the sticks.

On the blunt end, paint a stripe of white about one inch wide. On the white stick, paint a contrasting color. This part really serves no purpose whatsoever except for looking rad.

Let everything dry thoroughly and pick up them sticks! Stay tuned for more DIY game night fun — we’re only halfway finished! xoxo
