houzz

Hi Guys! I’m super excited to have a guest post today from Becky over at Houzz. If you don’t know it, you should check it out — especially if you’re in the midst of restyling your home in any way. I asked the good folks at Houzz if they had any inspiration for a functional but super-chic home office, and they came back with some major goodness.  Check it out.  xoxo

Hello everyone! My name is Becky and I’m a contributor at Houzz, a home design site focused on helping design professionals and homeowners manage the remodeling and decorating process. Thanks so much to Chelsea for having me!

In a small home, a home office area can mean a corner of your bedroom, a nook off the kitchen or even a tight closet. When your workspace is so integrated into the rest of your home, it’s important to plan the space efficiently and also maintain a level of style. Here are three office spaces that can exist as a part of other rooms without looking like a pile of messy stress.

This is the kind of home office that fits into a glamorous bedroom. If you replace the laptop with a table mirror, it instantly transforms into a dressing table fit for a fashion-forward diva.

Notes to take from this home office:

  • Use a desk with a light profile.
  • Keeping most of the lines rectilinear provides a uniform look that’s pleasing to the eye.
  • Using clear glass or lucite lamp bases keeps the desk from looking cluttered.

This office has lots of white, which makes the carefully edited colorful patterns stand out.

Notes to take from this home office:

  • The geometric accent wall is a strong backdrop and everything else needs to bow down to it.
  • Chic and simple white cabinets provide scads of storage space for messy paper clutter, files, supplies and equipment.
  • Symmetry provided by the two table lamps and magazine files adds a pleasing balance to the space.

Office storage doesn’t need to consist of old metal file cabinets.

Notes to take from this home office:

  • Your style does not need to be all business; use a Beverly Hills dream closet for inspiration if that’s what floats your boat.
  • You can outfit all sorts of storage pieces to suit your office. Scanners, printers, papers and files are all hidden in this chic, non-officey cabinet.

Thanks so much to Chelsea for giving me this topic; to be honest I’m writing from my dining room table as my home office is in a scary state right now. Writing this has inspired me to go attack it and make it a more inspiring space!

phillip light

Guys, I have a new favorite artist and I just have to share with you! If you don’t know Phillip Light, you’re missing out. I came across him on the web and just fell in love with his illustrations.

Phillip was kind enough to give us a little Q and A about himself and his work. Read on if you want to be impressed.

Tell us what you’re studying!
Right now I’m an Art major at the University of Oregon with an emphasis in Illustration, but I will be transferring to Art Center College of Design as an Entertainment Design Major for the fall term 2012. I will be studying various aspects of the Concept Design field for Animation, Film, and Video games. After school I would love to work for an animation studio as a Visual Development Artist/Character Designer!

Do you have any favorites among your body of work?
I just finished an illustration called “Laundry Day” which I’m really happy with and is definitely one of my favorites so far. I’m also really proud of my redesign project for the story “The Paper Bag Princess.” (Hey Phillip, “Laundry Day” is our favorite, too!)

What are your favorite tools? Do you prefer to work digitally or on paper?
I’m really in love with Photoshop CS5 which is the digital program I work in a majority of the time. I just think it’s really amazing to use brushes that create the effects of traditional tools without having to actually go out and by them. Haha! But I still love drawing traditionally. I always do my drawings on paper with pencil before I color them in Photoshop. My favorite traditional tools to use are colored pencil and ink with a brush.

I loved Phillip’s work so much that I commissioned him to do a drawing of my niece for her 2nd birthday. I was completely blown away by what he came up with!

Is this guy amazing, or what? He’s also always up for a commissioned piece (and his rates are amazingly reasonable, if you ask me!), so contact him for more info if you’re interested. Thanks Phillip! xoxo

lovely indeed around the web

Hi all!  Just wanted to update you with a couple of guest posts I’ve been busy with lately!  First up, be sure to check out my Easter egg DIY over on The Sweetest Occasion.  It’s quick and simple and there are about a million ways you could modify it.  Here’s a sneak peek:

Next up, Mr. Lovely and I had the honor of being interviewed for Green Couch Design’sCreatives Near You” series!  It’s a great column that features creative couples and the way that they work, play, and live their lives together.  Our interview covers lots of stuff about our lives in NYC, the way that we work together, and even fun tidbits like what a typical date night looks like for us.  Head over and read all about it!  xoxo

etsy find: square gardens finger puppets

Happy Monday, friends!  We’re taking a quick break today from wedding recaps; I’ll be posting some of our actual wedding photos tomorrow, but for now, let’s talk Etsy!  Remember a few weeks ago when my friend Emily did a little guest appearance about her adorable cow finger puppets?  Well, brace yourselves, because she has opened an Etsy shop, and it’s a finger puppet paradise.

Emily’s shop is called Square Gardens, and it’s a veritable extravaganza of cute.  And beyond the cute, Emily has created puppet collections that can be used to teach, to tell stories, and to encourage creativity in little ones and big ones alike.  Each finger puppet is hand cut and sewn by sweet Emily herself, and made from 100% recycled felt (fun and eco-friendly!). Right now, the shop has tons of fun fall puppets, but my personal fave is the “Five Little Monkeys” set, complete with 5 monkeys, Mama, the Doctor, and the bed for the monkeys to jump on!

Go take a peek to see more of Emily’s puppets at Square Gardens, and go back often — rumor has it that there will be more holiday puppets soon, and a full family set where you can specify characteristics to match your own family!  I’m thinking that my niece might end up with some of these in her stocking this Christmas (and I might get a couple for myself, ya know, just for funsies).  Good going, Em!  xoxo

well-groomed & grant’s golden brand pomade

Hi all!  Mr. Lovely here again.  I had such a good time with my last post, I asked the little lady if I could write another!  Here we go.

Since my lovely fiance has gotten so very entrenched in the blog world, I too have started paying attention to all the blogs out there.  One of my new favorites is Well-Groomed, a man-friendly blog that covers everything concerning dude wedding style.

Recently, they held a contest giving away some awesome hair styling products. And guess what? I won! I got some good old-fashioned pomade to style my hair up for the big day.  Maybe we’ll do a photoshoot of all the different ways I can style my hair with it (and hopefully I won’t end up looking like Jimmy Neutron).

Big thanks to Darren at Well-Groomed and Grant’s Golden Brand Pomade!
