Wise Words for a Saturday

We’ve got one more day of Alt Summit, but I thought I’d share some wisdom from the insanely talented Darcy Miller, Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Weddings. She’s literally called the Celebration Expert at Martha Stewart Headquarters, so this girl knows how to party. And here’s what she has to say.

Darcy MillerI mean, it doesn’t get much simpler than that. Have a great weekend — we’ll be back next week with recaps galore, and some new DIYs for Valentine’s Day! xoxo

Do the Hustle

You guys! First of all, I just need to put it out there that our DIY and Pinterest Alt panel happened and we made it through alive! Seriously, we were all nervous like a bunch of dorks but we hitched up our britches and did the thing. Not gonna lie — I’m relieved that it’s done, so I can focus more fully on the rest of the conference. But it was awesome and I’d totally do it again.

And speaking of panels, I sat and listened to a couple of really great ones. And I think that the best thing I heard all day was from Jenny Komenda of Little Green Notebook, who I loved for just telling it like it is. (Sometimes we bloggers can get a little sugar-coated.)

Hustle

When she said it, my brain went “Yes.” And it’s true in any discipline where no one is pushing you but yourself. If you don’t hustle, someone else will. All day yesterday I was looking around at the attendees, and you can see the people who are out there, doing the work to get the results. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable, sometimes it’s hard, but it always pays off to do the hustle. xoxo

MSN Fiesta Sneak Peek

So yesterday, a gaggle of bloggers descended on Salt Lake City and the poor town never knew what hit it. No joke, you can spot one of us from a mile away, and it’s kind of fun to play “Find the Blogger” out on the street. (Colored jeans and a topknot are a dead giveaway.)

Yesterday was a day of getting-to-know-you events, and I may or may not have attended four parties. Four! I have to say, it was a fantastic day, but I do get a little shy sometimes and it’s hard to keep pushing yourself to make introductions and be part of every event that happens. So I’m deciding to take things as they come and just do the best I can.

Today I’ll be speaking on a panel about DIYs and Pinterest, so cross your fingers for me! I think the panel is going to be pretty killer — I’m speaking with some amazing folks (I’m still pinching myself to be alongside Melissa, Chris, Jenny, and Jill!). And here’s just a quick peek at the dinner that I styled yesterday for MSN. We’ll have a post after Alt featuring some of the DIYs we created for the dinner, and lots more photos! xoxo

How I Chose Lovely Indeed’s Name

Lovely Indeed

Recently, I’ve been wanting to share more with you about the behind-the-scenes of Lovely Indeed. I feel like there’s so much more going on than what you see when you come to the blog, and I wanna let you in on some of the secrets. And after I thought about it, I realized there’s no better place to start than the beginning, so I thought I’d tell you how I chose the title. So here we go.

Immediately after Mr. Lovely proposed to me, I stuck my head into the wedding blog world and never came up for air. I had never really read blogs before and at first I didn’t quite get it, but I quickly realized that this world was made up of people like me! People who love beautiful things and who love sharing and who love connecting. So being the all-or-nothing girl that I am, I obviously decided to start a blog of my own.

Right away, I wanted the blog to be called The Lovely Life. It was in my head and it stuck. I’ve always felt like life is just such a lovely thing, and I’ve always kind of been about finding beauty in the world, and so I thought it was perfect. And of course, when I searched around, the domain name was taken. So was the Twitter handle. For a hot second I considered pursuing it and trying to buy the domain off of whoever had it, but that seemed silly. I mean, all I had to do was think up something that I loved as much.

So I brainstormed. For a few days I wrote down anything that came to mind, and I ran the lists past Mr. Lovely and my mom (who is great at that kind of stuff). Finally, one day I kind of asked myself the question, Isn’t life lovely? And my brain immediately answered, Lovely, Indeed! And boom. There it was.

And if you’ve been around here forever you might remember that I used to use that punctuation in the blog’s title. It was technically Lovely, Indeed! I got tired of that real fast. I mean, no one likes a title that seems like it’s shouting, right? So I took the punctuation away and trademarked that baby. (Yep, Lovely Indeed is a registered trademark. You gotta protect yo’ business.)

And that’s the end of that story! Do you have a blog? If you do, I’d love to hear how you chose the name. Do tell! xoxo
