Two-Minute Makeup Routine

Whether you run on mom time or plain ol’ busy person time, some days (orrrr most days) you just don’t have a million years to stand in front of the mirror doing your hair and makeup. Right? Right. But also, I’m a firm believer in trying to look put together just about every day, because I just feel better when I do. So to that end, I’ve accidentally developed a fail-proof two minutes (or less!) makeup routine that is totally doable on the daily. I didn’t set out to make it happen, but it turns out that when you have a baby screaming for you to make him breakfast you just eliminate all parts of your beauty routine that aren’t absolute necessity. It’s like Darwin’s natural selection, but in your makeup bag.

Foundation or BB Cream. I’m still into bareMinerals bareSkin these days after having tried if a couple years back. It’s super quick to put on and you can apply it with clean hands to save time instead of getting all fancy with a foundation brush. It covers quickly but feels really light and breathable.

Eye Primer. My eyelids are persnickety and if I don’t use this stuff, any eyeshadow I apply will be on my cheeks by lunchtime. My fave is Stay Don’t Stray. It evens out color on your eyelid (and underneath if you apply it!), and holds on to shadow like crazy. Also, don’t tell my aesthetician but I use this stuff as concealer too, if I have a spot that needs covering. I’m a smarty.

Shadow. Keep a little palette on hand and you can switch it up! On the daily, I use a light shade under my brow and on the inside corners of my eyes, and a neutral shade with a tiny bit of shimmer all over the lid. It’s a super-quick way to look awake and fresh. On days that you have more time, get a little crazy and add a shade or two.

Rouge. Oooooh I feel so fancy for having said rouge instead of blush. But really, it’s blush. These days I use Nars Deep Throat, which is just a perfect little punch for your cheeks.

Lips. After having Henry, I had to switch up my lip plan a little because I kept leaving lipstick kisses all over his cute little cheeks! I found the Vaseline Lip Tins, which I love — they’re a throwback to the original design from the late 1800’s! How fun is that? I use the Rosy Lips for a little tint of color and lots of moisture (but the Cocoa Butter flavor is a close second fave!). It’s not sticky or greasy so I can smooch the kid all day long, but it has the perfect amount of glossy shine. (You can snag ’em Vasline.us, target.com, or at your local Target!)

Lashes. I’ve long been a devotee of benefit’s mascaras and these days I’m into the Roller Lash! It’s lengthening and curling, so you can skip the eyelash curler step. This is always my last step to really look awake, even if we didn’t exactly get a full night’s sleep the night before.

Done! Now, is this the makeup job I would do for a photoshoot? Nope. But will this face take you to the office/grocery store/playdate/brunch? For sure. Busy hotties of the world, rejoice — it doesn’t take a million years to put your face on! I’d love to know your faves for a quickie makeup routine — do tell! xoxo

Easy Holiday Hairstyle

I hope you came here today looking for too much personal information about my hair, because it’s about to come atcha. This mane of mine has been a wild ride for the last couple of years and I blame it all on my adorable son. For starters, everybody told me that I would have amazing hair when I was pregnant. Lies. All lies. My hair just plain old stopped growing. Like, it was stunted for some reason. Then I had the kid and it started getting longer again, but it was kind of brittle, and half of it also fell out. I could see scalp in the mirror and it was horrifying. More recently, it’s started growing back in again in the form of tiny baby wisps all over, especially at my forehead. So it’s like I have an extra set of super short baby bangs underneath my real bangs. It’s adorable, let me tell ya.

All of this is to say that I’ve been need of a major haircare overhaul, and I think I found it. My baby bangs are behaving and my hair is getting back to it’s fuller, healthier, more agreeable self. It’s been a ton of trial and error but I recently hit on the Living Proof line and for really reals it’s been a lifesaver. I’m not fretting any more about my hair breaking off, or about little wispies because they’re just kind of magically improving. It’s awesome.

And also, it’s holiday hair season! I don’t really claim to be any sort of a hairstyle expert, but this 5 minute trick is my no-fail for pretty party hair. You can do it yourself without having to book an appointment for a blowout or anything fancy like that.

Step 1: Start with dry hair and your favorite styling products. After I washed, I used a little thickening mousse at the roots and this styling treatment. I just rough-dried my hair in the morning and put it in a side part all day until I was ready to style it.

Step 2: Use a small-barrel curling iron (I used 1 inch) to create ringlets all around your head. Be sure to curl the ends of your hair as well. Position the curling iron so that the hair curls in toward your face.

Step 3: Spritz a light mist of your favorite flexible hairspray. This one is amazing.

Step 4: Gently brush out the curls into soft, vintage-looking waves.

Step 5: Tuck one side behind your ear. Add some bling for extra festivity!

That’s it. Start to finish, it takes me five minutes; if your hair is long or super thick it might take a few minutes longer. But it’s pretty much a guaranteed win for pretty party hair! If you’re looking for the right styling products to make it work on your hair type, give Living Proof’s product selector tool a try. You can enter your specific needs and it’ll let you know what will work best for you. Those smarties! Now go get yourself all jazzed up for a holiday shindig — and have an extra eggnog for me. xoxo

Your Skin After Baby

You guys. I’m learning that there are approximately one zillion things that no one warns you about when you have a baby. It’s like there’s this secret litany of crazy things that happen to your body after that baby is born, and no one really wants to talk about it because you might just run away screaming. But I’m here to keep it real, so let’s talk about my skin.

It’s always been an issue, if you remember. During the first trimester of my pregnancy I had spots on my forehead that would put a high schooler to shame. And now, after having the little guy, I’m battling some crazy stuff again — there are a few breakouts (although not as bad as before) with these insane patches of dry skin that will. not. leave. I have tried it all. Exfoliation. Moisturizer. Voodoo rain dances. Nothing was working, until this stuff.

I figured that since bareMinerals was my answer last time, I should see if they had anything that would help out my adorable scaly skin. Turns out, there’s a new product called Complexion Rescue — it’s somewhere between a BB cream and a CC cream and a simple tinted moisturizer. I gave it a shot, and no joke, within about a week the dry patches were clearing. My skin has been getting smoother and more hydrated, and I’m not bombarding it with scary amounts of exfoliation or creams. I love this stuff because it’s double duty, like feeding your skin some great moisture and putting on your makeup at the same time. (I’m all about time savers these days.)

On our trip to LA recently we stayed at an airbnb with these gorgeous fruit trees in the backyard and Mr. Lovely suggested taking some photos back there with Henry. A couple of weeks before, it would have stressed me out to hop in front of the camera and I would have immediately taken to Photoshop to fix up my skin. But with the dry patches cleared up I was all about it. And Henry was cooperative too (that delicious little nugget)! It’s so nice to just feel fresh-faced and not have to worry about hiding any imperfections. Just like bareMinerals’ mantra: Be original. Be natural. Be good.

If your skin needs a little rehab these days what with the winter months, you definitely want to give this stuff a try. I’ll be using it to get through these crazy post-baby skin times! And I’m curious — if you have little ones, did you experience anything crazy with your skin after they arrived? xoxo

Honesty bomb: I have bad skin. I have my whole life. I remember when I got engaged the very first thing I did was make an appointment with a dermatologist because the only thing I could think of was how frustrated I’d be if I had to worry about breakouts on my wedding day.

If you’ve ever dealt with acne, you know what I’m talking about — the sinking feeling when you know that a breakout is coming, or having an ugly spot on your face totally ruin your day. Sometimes I feel like I’ve spent my life searching for the perfect products to fix, hide, conceal, cover, treat, zap, blah blah blah. Come on, skin! These days I mostly have it under control but I do get flare-ups every so often.

Enter my new favorite thing: bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation. When bareMinerals recently announced their new product, I was really pumped to try it because my skin and I are currently not speaking. It needs a little help. bareSkin seemed like an interesting choice because it’s got clean, pure ingredients like Vitamin C and plant stem cells (and no oils or fragrance), but it can provide as much or as little coverage as you like. When I first buffed it on (yeah, you buff it on with this fancy Perfecting Face Brush like a total professional), I could barely feel it but I could see that it was evening out my skin tone and subtly covering the spots that were making me feel self-conscious. It didn’t look cakey or makeup-y. It just looked like a really good version of my skin. Double bonus: it’s got SPF as well.

Because I’m feeling bold, and because I seriously love this stuff, I’m letting it all hang out with a good ol’ before and after. The before is a completely bare face, freshly washed. And the after is with about 4 drops of bareSkin, using the perfecting brush. (No other product and no photoshop!) It’s crazy how it evens out my redness and covers those scary little spots, but still doesn’t feel heavy. Don’t judge my before, y’all!

I’d love to know if you’ve ever struggled with your skin like I do! Or if you have a skin routine that you love. When I find a product I love, I just get so encouraged and want to run through the streets telling everyone I pass — just in case it can help someone else, too. Thanks bareMinerals! xoxo
