The List App

Public Service Announcement! There’s a new app that I’m fascinated with and I think you might love it too! It’s just called The List App, and it’s – you guessed it – an app of lists. You can make lists, share lists, follow lists, suggest things to other users lists, and more. You have to go look! You know how I feel about lists to begin with, and after scrolling through some of the hilarious, thought-provoking, and just fun stuff on there I’m now obsessed. If you download it, follow me (I’m @lovelyindeed) and I have some lists there that could use your suggestions about content for the blog, future projects, and some silly stuff too. (There may or may not be a list where I recount all of my Halloween costumes by grade.)

In other news, it’s Halloween this weekend! We finally, finally decided on a family Halloween costume so follow along on Instagram to see what we are! Hope you all have a super safe and happy Halloween – be sure to share photos so I can see your costumes! xoxo

Every time a new season hits, I proclaim it to be my favorite. I admit it, I’m fickle in the weather department. But fall OH FALL is so wonderful, isn’t it?! Mostly because you get to haul out your scarves and boots and start to build a little cocoon that will keep you cozy through the winter. I’ve never been much of a pumpkin spice latte girl, but a good fall shoe? Gets me every time.

I always have to hunt for the perfect boot — a little heel, super comfy, not too tight on the leg, and a warm brown color. Sometimes it’s impossible to find but this pair from Johnston & Murphy showed up on my doorstep (literally) and woah my search is over. If you’re looking for your go-to boot this year, this is it. I kid you not, when I took them out of the box I spent a minute or two petting the leather because it’s so soft.

Fall Shoes

And how about a little pop of fall color? The blue on those driving moccasins is kind of to die for, right? They’re so comfy and perfect with a fall dress or a good pair of jeans, too. Between these two pairs I’ve got my fall shoe game on lock! Otherwise, you’ll see me in a whole mess of chambray during autumn. Toss on a scarf for good measure and a couple of simple accessories and you’ve got my fall uniform. It’s also got the mom seal of approval — comfy enough to get down on the floor and play and easy enough to run after Henry when he’s trying to open the refrigerator for the 7th time that day. (And if you’re a nursing mom, a chambray button up shirt is a super cool nursing-friendly option!)

DIY Gold + Colorblock Cutting Boards

This thing happens to me when I’m in Ikea where I kind of go on a bonanza of DIY possibilities. They have such a great selection of simple pieces in the marketplace and I can’t help but want to put a DIY finish on everything in sight. Last time we went I grabbed a set of these chopping boards because they were just begging for something. I wasn’t sure what yet, so they sat in my closet for a while, just waiting for their turn. The other day I pulled them out and they finally got a little upgrade that I love! It’s a quickie project but it turns out beautifully, and you kind of can’t mess it up. Perfect.

Materials

Make Time: 10 Minutes per Board (Plus Drying Time)

DIY Gold + Colorblock Cutting Boards

Step 1: Use tape to mask off  the handle of the board. Paint a layer of craft paint on the unmasked area of the handle. Allow it to dry and paint on another coat if necessary.

Step 2: Remove the masking tape and allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 3: Mask off another portion of the handle, toward the tip. Paint the tip of the handle with gold leaf adhesive. Be careful to just use a thin layer; don’t allow it to pool.

Step 4: Allow the adhesive to dry for about a minute, or until tacky to the touch.

Step 5: Press a sheet of gold leaf only over the area of adhesive. Burnish the sheet with your finger so that the leaf firmly adheres. Pull away the sheet with the excess gold.

Step 6: With a clean, dry paintbrush, dust away the excess gold leaf until the board is clean.

DIY Gold + Colorblock Cutting Boards

Ta-daaaa! These are so pretty for so many things — cheese boards, small serving trays, a little fall gift for a friend, or just for styling in photos. (I have a feeling you’ll be seeing these pop up here and there around these parts!) Just be sure if you use them as serving trays you don’t allow the food to come in contact with the paint or gold leaf. Also, wash by hand and don’t get the gold wet. Hope you try these little beauties! xoxo

I’m hosting Thanksgiving this year like a grownup, you guys! And I kind of want to go all out — fancy dishes, gold flatware, and definitely place cards. But even though we’re keeping it a little formal, I thought the place cards could use a little something funky (if for no other reason than to freak out my mom) so I came up with these cool little mini air plant wreaths! They’re so easy and so fast, and they’d be perfect for a Friendsgiving as well. Send the little air plants home with your guests as favors and you’ve got all your bases covered!

How to Make Mini Air Plant Wreath Place Cards for Thanksgiving

Now I know some of y’all don’t have easy access to air plants so lucky for you this project is my kit of the month over on Darby Smart! They’ll ship you everything you need, from the embroidery hoop to the plants. And their little air plants are super quality; they all showed up at my doorstep happy and healthy. Head over for more photos and to get the full tutorial. And grab yourself a kit to make some air plant wreath place cards if you’re hosting Thanksgiving, too! xoxo

GET THE KIT HERE

P.S. If your guests need instructions on how to care for the air plants, just tell them to soak them in a bowl of water overnight once a week, then let them dry thoroughly. Piece of cake!

behindthescenes

This post has been DYING to happen for years, y’all. And Mr. Lovely officially gave me the go-ahead, so I’m pretty excited (for lack of a better word?) to share with you some of the best behind the scenes photos you’re gonna see, possibly ever. Because we work side by side day in and day out, we often help each other out with projects. I’m still a one-woman team at Lovely Indeed for the most part, which means we usually take all our own photos. Of the two of us, I’m a better photographer, so usually I’ll put the camera on the right settings and set a shot, then Ryan will hop behind the camera and actually take photos of my or my hands or whatever. But while I’m setting the shot, I need a subject, so Ryan stands in… Do you see where I’m going with this? I have the most magnificent collection of terrible, hilarious photos of my husband waiting for me to test shoot and I’m sorry but they are just begging to be shared. Let’s just get right to it, shall we? I took the liberty of pairing Ryan’s test shot alongside the final shot, just for funsies.

Sometimes, they’re not so bad, right?

behindthescenes4

And then sometimes they just kind of look like bad cellphone photos.

Sometimes he realllllllly doesn’t want to be doing whatever it is that we’re doing.

And then sometimes he really gets into it.

Behind the Scenes

I am sitting here dying laughing while I write this post! Come on, if you’re a blogger with a husband you KNOW you have similar photos. Or if not, hopefully you’ve had a laugh at my husband’s expense today. Don’t worry, he can take it. xoxo

Have you ever walked into a house where there were mulling spices simmering on the stove? It’s a sure way to get me to stay somewhere forever. That smell is knock-you-over intoxicating, and if those spices happen to be in a pot of simmering wine, then I’m done for. I mixed up a super simple mulling spice recipe over on Swooned this month if you want to give it a go! There’s also an easy packaging idea and a printable so you can mix it up and give it as a favor to guests at a party or wedding. Go get the tutorial and see more pretty photos right here! xoxo

DIY Gold Skulls

So. I was wandering around in the Halloween section of a store recently and I saw these awesome little golden metal skulls and fell in love. And then I picked one up and it was insanely heavy and insanely expensive. So I put it back and pouted and moved on. And then a little farther down the aisle were these little styrofoam skulls for about two bucks each. And my DIY instincts kicked in and I was like Take THAT, suckers, and I decided to make myself some creepy/cool little gold skulls for a teeny fraction of the cost of the originals. And that, friends, makes my day.

Materials

Make Time: 5 Minutes per Skull

DIY Gold Skulls

Step 1: Brush off any dust or debris from your skull.

Step 2: Hold the skull by the eye sockets and paint all other areas gold. Then set the skull down on a dry spot to paint the eyes.

Step 3: Allow the skulls to dry thoroughly.

DIY Gold Skulls

Bing bang boom! These are so easy and so cool and they’re adding a little bit of edgy fun to our Halloween decor this year. (I think my mom secretly hates them but you can’t please everyone right?!) And they’re the perfect substitute for those crazy expensive skulls I originally spotted to boot. I like that they’re on the smaller side, too, so it’s not like I’M A SKULL LOOK AT ME GAHHHHH. Because obviously, when you’re painting a fake cranium gold, you like to be subtle. 😉 Happy Halloween! xoxo

This Week + A Quick Trip

Sometimes you just have to jet off to see your Bestie, ya know? I’m writing from Denver, where I’ll be for all of 48 hours, because my BFF and I just needed some time to bestie around together. So Ryan and Henry are home alone doing dude things (come to think of it, if you see Ryan on Instagram you should say hi just to entertain him) and probably running around the house in underwear and sunglasses. Or whatever dudes do when they’re alone. And BTW, if you’re in the Denver area, check this out for sure! My bestie just happens to run the coolest gym in town and there’s a big ol’ celebration going on with all kinds of fun ways to hang out and work out!

So here I am in Denver! When I arrived at the airport there was a special treat waiting — a fancy schmancy car from Blacklane. Have you ever used a car service from the airport? I cannot even tell you how much it beats waiting in the taxi line. I felt pretty VIP, if I do say so myself. If you’re flying into or out of one of the cities that Blacklane services you have to try it.

In other news, our MiniMakers workshop is a week from tomorrow! Did you get your tickets? If you’ve got a family in the San Francisco Bay Area, check it out and come get crafty with us! The recommended age for little ones is about 4-8 but we have lots of other ages coming, so if you’re curious about whether your kiddo would enjoy it just shoot me an email at [email protected] and we can chat! We have just a few seats left open and would love to hang out with you and your fam. Get tickets here!

Get out there and have a lovely weekend! xoxo
