Be Merry

Well darlings, here we are. I’ll be taking the rest of this year off to be with family, enjoy the blessings that we’ve been doused with recently, and celebrate Christmas. I hope you are able to take some time off, whether or not you celebrate, to wrap the year up and reflect on the year that’s coming. I hope, if you do celebrate Christmas, that you feel full of the joy that’s saved especially for today.

Thank you, as always, for sharing your time here with me. I can’t wait to come back in 2015 and show you the things that we have coming — I promise, it’ll be extra lovely. So you go and have yourself some beautiful holidays, and be merry. xoxo

White Christmas Tree

We’re sneaking out early this week for a long weekend! We’re hosting the fam’s annual Christmas Eve shindig at our house this year, so we’ve got some prepping to do for next week. And on top of that, the little dude is having his very first official photo shoot this weekend — I’m so excited to have a photographer come and snap some photos of him while he’s so very tiny. And I’m double excited that I’m not the one taking the photos this time. Takes the pressure off.

In other news, we have not one but two Christmas trees in our house this year, and I highly recommend it. Get on that train, guys. Have a beautiful weekend! xoxo

Slow Mornings

I have to tell you, gang, I am soaking up this time off with Mr. Lovely and little Henry like gangbusters. Mornings have become my favorite time, even after some sleepless nights here and there. After hours and hours of nursing in the dark, the morning comes, and babies just look so cute in the morning, and husbands look all scruffy and sleepy, and we all just kind of huddle in bed until we can bear getting up and getting on with our day. It’s my very favorite, these slow mornings where we turn on the Christmas tree lights and stay in sweatpants and socks and just let the clock do whatever it’s gonna do. Eventually we all get up and get dressed and get going, but oh — those mornings are nice.

What are you loving right now? xoxo

Pregnancy Must Haves

I have to tell you, I’ve been so grateful for your support and enthusiasm and general radness when it comes to all of the baby stuff I’ve been sharing here on the ol’ blog. I know that not all of you are parents and perhaps the baby stuff doesn’t really interest you, but I’ve always tried to share here about what’s going on in my life, and let’s be real — a pregnancy and babies are pretty all-consuming. So thank you for coming along on the ride.

For those of you who are parents, or planning on being parents someday, or maybe are expecting right now, I thought I’d try to repay your kindness and share a few things that really came in handy throughout that crazy, twisty-turny, uncharted, swollen, pregnant territory. These were my pregnancy go-tos, whether it was for the entire nine months or just a few crucial weeks. If you’re interested, read on!

Living Room and Office Before and After

Doesn’t it just feel so good when you move into a new place and finally things start coming together? It always takes me a million years to get a room to a place where I love it (and even then I am a chronic rearranger). Sometimes I just have a heck of a time committing to hanging a certain thing on the wall, or moving a piece of furniture here or there. I just like to live with things for a while to let them marinate and see how I feel about it all. It drives Mr. Lovely absolutely bananas. Good thing he likes me. But we finally finished a couple more rooms in the house recently and I thought it would be fun to do a little before and after feature, because I snapped some crazy photos from back in the day when these rooms were just basically piles of stuff.

Our living room is gigantic and kind of long & narrow, with one wall that’s basically entirely windows. So it was kind of tricky to arrange. We wanted it to feel open and airy but also cozy and lived-in. Does that exist? I don’t know. But I think we just about got there. Here’s the before and after.

Living Room and Office Before and After

Living Room and Office Before and After

Living Room and Office Before and AfterBefore we moved in we refinished all of the original hardwood, so we wanted to keep plenty of it showing but still have a cozy place to sit or put your feet. West Elm was kind enough to send us their totally rad honeycomb rug, which has turned out to be the perfect solution. They sent along one of their fab lacquer trays as well, which we’re using as a coffee table (on top of the Kilim Pouf that we already had). We saved our pennies and snapped up a pair of Sloan chairs, upholstered in that amazing deep blue, and they’re maybe my favorite pieces of furniture in the house. Ohmygosh those chairs.

I love hanging out in this room! We pull the guitars off the wall and make up goofy songs, and we have friends over for drinks, and we watch all of the family babies run around and flop on all of the ottomans. It’s a good room.

And now, the office before and after!

Living Room and Office Before and After

Living Room and Office Before and After

The new office is kind of a mishmash of our old desks with some new tricks. West Elm made another dream come true and sent the best office chairs in all the land. Mr. Lovely and I roll around and twirl in those things all day long. I’m also loving these little marble boxes — perfect for little office this-and-that’s. (Like the gold paperclips that you obviously need.) We put up shelves on either side of our desks and stocked them with our faves, and it’s totally a lady-side/man-side situation. Other than that, the office stays pretty simple, with lots of moveable pieces that we can roll around for photoshoots and the like. I’m super into it. It’s like working in a big, beautiful white box.

Stay tuned for more pieces of the new house as we keep finishing it bit by bit! A big smushy hug to West Elm for being my favorite place to shop and for helping us get the new place outfitted. Have a good weekend, guys! xoxo

I know, I know — the animal bookend thing has totally been done. But Mr. Lovely and I saw these little Jonathan Adler dachshund bookends, fell in love, and wanted to take a stab at some that didn’t cost one zillion dollars. So we nixed the usual gold spray paint treatment or any zany colors and went totally classic, clean, and simple. And I loooove them. The white on the animals gets that faux ceramic look we were going for, and the simple natural wood color is so cool. We decided to try a couple of different animals, to show you some options for making these guys too!

Materials

Make Time: 2 Hours (plus drying time)

Start by cutting your wood to size. You’ll need two blocks of wood for each side of the bookends (we used two so the bookends would be a little heavier and keep the books upright). Measure them to your liking; they’ll be around 4 or 5 inches wide and deep, depending on the animals you choose. If you don’t have a saw, have them make cuts for you at your local hardware store! Once you have your wood blocks, give them a good sanding to make sure they’re nice and smooth.

DIY Faux Ceramic Animal Bookends

Screw the wood blocks together. Arrange them perpendicular to each other, with the upper piece resting on top of the bottom piece. Screw through the bottom piece and up into the top so that the screws are hidden when the bookends are upright.

Apply your wood sealer to the blocks according to the directions on your packaging. While that’s drying, add a coat of white paint to your animals. Let everything dry thoroughly and add another coat all around! Note: If you’re using a larger animal that you’d like to cut in half, like the polar bear, cut the animal in half vertically using the saw before you paint.

Once the sealer is set and the animals are dry, use the E6000 to affix the animals to your bookends. Be sure to compare the two sides of the bookends so that the animals are aligned with each other.

DIY Faux Ceramic Animal Bookends

Let the glue set and put your bookends to good use! I love these guys — we have a pair in the baby’s room and another pair on our grownup bookcase. Because doesn’t every grownup need a llama or polar bear bookend? I’m pretty sure they do. xoxo

12 Days of Kindness Advent Calendar Printable

Last year for the holidays, I made and shared one of my very favorite printables ever. You might remember it — it’s a take on the 12 Days of Christmas, but each day there’s a small activity or act of kindness that you or your family can perform in and around your neighborhood (or even just for each other). Maybe you have time for all 12 or maybe you just have time for one or two, but it’s such a lovely way to celebrate the holidays in a way that has nothing to do with wrapping paper or tinsel. It’s all about giving of yourself.
